You Call This An Election?

Conundrum
This month the SC Progressive Network fourth-Tuesday movie night moves to an after-work networking night. We are mixing socializing with a guest speaker or two, followed by discussion or short film. This month the conversation is: You call this an election? We'll take a look at our system, with the nation's least competitive legislative elections (83% of our 170 legislators faced no major party opposition in the general election), and we'll get a report from our Election Protection coalition on problems at the polls.
Were you one of the exemplary citizens who stood in line for six hours to cast a vote? Did you vote for Mr. Obama knowing that the electoral college makes your choice irrelevant? Were you one of the confused voters who called the Election Protection Hotline to report that they left the Democrats off the electronic ballot, when in fact there we no Democratic candidates? Come share your Election Day story.
We'll watch a 15-minute documentary Don't Trust the Touchscreens about the very computers we use to vote. Dr. Duncan Buell, a USC computer expert who warned the state Election Commission not to buy these machines, will be on hand to tell us why we need a new voting system and critique the system failures in Richland County.
Doors open at 5:30pm; the program begins at 6. For details, call 803-808-3384.
